Need some excersise? Want to help out a great cause? Friends of Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge is announcing the first ever Wild Goose Chase Virtual Races. All funds raised from this event are earmarked to support the Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge activities and to promote the refuge resources to the public. We hope this will be a fun way for you to support our efforts.
The 2020 annual fall Wild Goose Chase Walk/Run was cancelled this year due to conflicts as well as the uncertainty surrounding the coronavirus.
We want to encourage you to get out and be active during this time in a socially responsible way. Thus was born the idea of a virtual race. You pick the course you want to cover and download the app noted below(from the Apple app store) and off you go! The race is open from May 15th thru May 31, 2020. The app will tell you when you have completed the distance and send that information to the race site. You can walk/run in your neighborhood, at a park on one of the rail trails or at the Shiawassee National WildLife Refuge. The trails at the refuge are open but please do not use the wildlife auto route both for your safety and because it is closed to pedestrian access. Remember it is spring and if you decide to use the refuge trails that they may have standing water and/or be muddy.
A virtual race allows an athlete to sign up for an event anywhere in North America. They are given several weeks to run on their own anywhere they desire. Most athletes will likely run in their own neighborhood, thus honoring the request from authorities to be socially distant to prevent the spread of the virus. Athletes will be able to download a free app that allows them to have automatic GPS tracking. Thus, if an event is perhaps a 5K, the athlete will be told when they have reached the proper distance on their run. Their time and distance is automatically uploaded. Should the athlete not have a smart phone or be out of contact with the internet, they can go directly to the ITS YOUR RACE web site and enter their time. During and after the virtual race, athletes can view their times and rankings on the website. Athletes can also purchase a souvenir package that includes a t-shirt, wristband and custom race bib. This raises additional funds for the Wild Goose Chase.
Getting your race time into the Wild Goose Chase Results Page:
You can list your virtual race time 2 different ways. The easiest is to upload the free mobile app which will track your distance, route and time, and you can upload your time to Its Your Race directly through the mobile app.You can also upload an image of the route you ran or walked to Its Your Race. To upload the mobile app, use the appropriate link (Apple or Android/Google) directly to the right on this screen.
You can also enter your time manualy by cliking on the Result tab near the top of this screen, scroll to your name and click the Update Time button. You will then need to sign into Its Your Race using your email address and password you used when registering. If you registered as a guest, you wil need to register yourself at this time to enter your time.
